Influence of surface modifications on bone resorbing giant cells

Betreuer: Dr.-Ing. Rainer Detsch, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Advances in critical size bone defect healing require novel approaches, in particular the development of suitable environments like biomimetic coatings on metal implants. For coating techniques of this kind, modified simulated body fluids (SBFs) can be used, as intended in this project. Through supersaturation, a hydroxyapatite layer can form on metallic substrates over time. The aim is to create an environment, based on biomimetic hydroxyapatite layers, to investigate osteoclasts behaviour. The project, which is being carried out at the Institute of Biomaterials (Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg) in collaboration with colleagues at University of Rostock, involves also electrical stimulation of the bone remodelling processes investigating the influence on bone cells especially osteoclasts [1].
