Nanostructured, antibacterial and bioactive coatings on metallic substrates by electric field assisted processes

Betreuer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

In this project we focus on electrophoretc deposition (EPD) to develop nanostructured, layered coatings with bioactive and antibacterial character on metallic biomaterials [1]. Coatings on both planar (for orthopaedic implants) and porous substrates (for tissue engineering scaffolds) are investigated. In particular, we focus on the EPD of bioactive glass nanoparticles combined with biopolymers and bioactive molecules or drugs, to form different coating layers with graded bioactivity and different drug delivery ability. The fundamental information obtained from this project will be of relevance for a rational design of EPD techniques for multifunctional, (nano)structured coatings with bioactive and antibacterial properties. The results will be relevant to produce a wide variety of functional, “soft” coatings on metallic substrates of different shape (planar surfaces, porous bodies) for biomedical applications.
