Synergistic effects of bioactive implanted materials, trace elements and small molecules promoting bone regeneration and osseointegration under osteoporotic conditions

This project is being carried out in the framework of the PPP collaborative program with China funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) involving the Engineering Research Center for Biomedical Materials of Ministry of Education, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), Shanghai, China (Prof. Jie Wei), and the FAU Institute of Biomaterials. The objective of the project is to develop novel bioactive bone implants by coating mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBG) on PEEK-based composites via electrophoretic deposition (EPD), which considers the extensive expertise of our Institute in the field of EPD of biomaterials (see for example our recent paper ). The coating with MBG enables the implants to release biologically active ions (e.g., Cu/Li ions)  and/or therapeutic molecules (antibiotics) to promote bone regeneration and osseointegration as well as to inhibit bacterial colonization. Before the end of the year, researchers of our Institute will travel to Shanghai to complete the characterisation of the materials in the partner laboratory at ECUST.
