Drug-free antibacterial polyesters for the treatment of infections

Betreuer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Dr. Chris Lovell (Lucideon, UK)

Set within the European-funded European Industrial Doctorates (EID) network “Drug-Free Antibacterial Hybrid Biopolymers for Medical Applications” (HyMedPoly) (Horizon 2020), this project aims to investigate new strategies for the development of therapies based on biomedical drug-free antibacterial polyesters for the treatment of infections. The research will focus on designing biodegradable and bioresorbable polyesters exploiting the antibacterial potential of the hydrolytic degradation of the polyesters itself. The coupling of these materials with other antibacterial agents will be also investigated. The new material will be fully characterized in terms of physico-chemical properties, antibacterial activity and biological compatibility in order to assess its suitability for soft tissue engineering and/or wound healing applications. The project involves strong collaboration with the industrial partner (Lucideon Ltd.), UK, where part of the research activities will be carried out.
