Smart composite coatings electrophoretically deposited on titanium substrates

Supervisor in Erlangen: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini

The fabrication of implants with modified surfaces to achieve high osteointegration properties with high antimicrobial activity is still under investigation [1,2]. This research project aims to produce and characterize smart composite coatings that release an antibacterial substance in a controlled manner while maintaining proper adhesion and proliferation of bone cells. The coatings will be based on smart biopolymers such as chitosan, Eudragit E 100, and poly(4-vinylpyridine) which are sensitive to the external environment such as pH and temperature changes. It is planned to enrich the biopolymer matrix with silver nanoparticles for antibacterial activity and bioactive glass to facilitate apatite formation on the coating surface. The scope includes the fabrication of composite coatings and the study of their chemical and physical properties and biocompatibility.
