Preparation of multifunctional bioactive composite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

Betreuer: Qaisar Nawaz, Prof. Dr. Ing. Aldo R. Boccaccini

This research project involves developing of bioactive composite scaffolds based on suitable inorganic materials and biodegradable polymers for bone tissue engineering and drug delivery function. In this scope firstly 45S5 bioactive glass scaffolds will be fabricated by the foam replica technique [1]. Afterwards mesoporous bioactive glasses will be synthesized by sol-gel technique. Then bioactive glass scaffolds are coated with the synthesized mesoporous bioactive glasses and a biodegradable polymer incorporating a model drug. The novel multifunctional composite scaffolds will be characterized in terms of microstructure, porosity, mechanical properties, bioactivity and drug releasing capability. The new family of scaffolds will be compared in their bioactivity and drug releasing ability with equivalent scaffold systems being developed by other members of the Institute of Biomaterials.
