Cytocompatibility of 3D 45S5 bioactive glass-based® scaffolds coated with metal ion doped mesoporous bioactive glass

Betreuer: Francesca Ciraldo, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

The aim of this Bachelor project is the production of 3D 45S5 bioactive glass (BG)-based scaffolds via replication technique [1]. The samples will be coated with mesoporous bioactive glass doped with metallic ions (MI-MBG) in order to confer antibacterial properties [2] and the possibility to be loaded with drugs [3]. 45S5 BG based scaffolds will be produced using polyurethane (PU) foam as sacrificial template and the MI-MBG will be produced by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process. The so produced scaffolds will be characterized in terms of morphology (by SEM) and bioactivity by immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) to test their ability to form a hydroxycarbonate apatite (HA) layer. Moreover, cell biology tests will be performed in order to assess the cytocompatibility of the material when placed in contact with bone cells.
