Bioactive glasses (BGs) are distinguished through excellent osteogenic and bone bonding properties [1]. Incorporating biologically active inorganic ions in BGs enhances their therapeutic performances and biomedical applications. Rubidium ( ) ions have been reported to show antibacterial activity, hampering osteoclast formation, and promoting osteoblastogenesis [1]. Therefore, doping bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGNs) with rubidium seems a promising approach [1]. This project aims to develop and characterize multifunctional Rb-doped mesoporous BGNs (Rb-MBGNs) scaffolds with antibacterial activity and drug delivery for bone repair. The foam replica method is used to make Rb-MBGN scaffolds [2]. Subsequently, the mechanical strength, bioactivity, drug delivery and antibacterial properties of the fabricated MBGNs scaffolds will be investigated. Moreover, scaffolds with improved mechanical stability and control drug release will be designed and fabricated by adding a gelatin coating [3].
