Development of Bioactive Glass Containing Resorbable Polymer-Based Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering Applications

The main focus of this project lies on the preparation and characterization of composite scaffolds based on natural polymers such as silk fibroin, gelatin and alginate dialdehyde (ADA) manufactured by freeze-drying technique. It has been previously reported that ADA-gelatin scaffolds facilitate cell adhesion with a high degradation rate, whereas the mechanical stiffness of such composites is relatively low [1]. Therefore, the incorporation of reinforcing polymeric or inorganic phases into the composites is proposed to overcome these limitations. As inorganic bioactive component, bioactivity glass particles are being used. Relevant properties such as porosity content, Young’s modulus as well as degradation and swelling capacity of the samples will be evaluated.
