Doctoral Double Degree between Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) and FAU
Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini will be coordinating, from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) side, a new doctoral double degree program between FAU and Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil. Students enrolled in this program can obtain a Ph.D. degree at FAU and simultaneously at UFSC after spending up to 12 months abroad. Double degree programs allow students to gather international academic and cultural experience, improve their language skills and enhance their prospects in a globalized world.
The project “Ph.D. with Double Degree UFSC-FAU” is funded by the Research Foundation of Santa Catarina (FAPESC), a southern state in Brazil, known for its connection with German culture and traditions. The initiative has the support of the Office of Doctoral Affairs, and the Institute of Biomaterials at FAU, under the coordination of Prof. Aldo Boccaccini. At UFSC, the project is led by the Graduate Program in Chemical Engineering (PosENQ), which is coordinated by Prof. Débora de Oliveira and Prof. Dachamir Hotza, with the participation of the Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PGMAT), which is coordinated by Prof. João Batista Rodrigues Neto and Prof. Aloisio Klein. Both PosENQ and PGMAT hold the highest concept (7) from CAPES, which is the national agency responsible for financing and evaluating graduate programs in Brazil. UFSC itself was recently recognized by Times Higher Education as the university #6 in Latin America and #4 in the country.
Up to 6 doctoral students from UFSC and FAU will be selected and benefit from scholarships for accommodation, transportation, and daily expenses abroad. At FAU, this program is directed at doctoral candidates who have already registered as PhD students at FAU. Other Master’s and Ph.D. students will be encouraged to participate in exchange activities between the partner universities, through the sharing of courses and research work. The activities will be held primarily in English in both countries.
Finally, students who meet the requirements from the partner universities will be granted, respectively, the titles of “Doctor in Chemical Engineering” or “Doctor in Materials Science and Engineering” by UFSC and “Ph.D. in Engineering” (“Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften” – Dr.-Ing.), by FAU.
