The CRC/TRR 225 “From the fundamentals of biofabrication towards functional tissue models” Summer School took place from August 3 to August 7, 2026, at the Department for Functional Materials in Medicine and Dentistry at Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg, Germany. The comprehensive program began with in-depth sessions on the history and techniques of biofabrication, as well as bioink engineering and rheology. Participants also took part in practical courses in anatomy and histology, complemented by hands-on training that provided first-hand experience with a range of specialized techniques. The sessions covered a broad spectrum of topics, including vascularization, bioreactors, histology, and microscopy, cell viability, molecular signaling, tissue integrity, and the development of mini-tissues. Beyond the scientific program, the summer school also featured workshops focused on personal and professional development. Inspiring entrepreneurial stories from spin-off companies further highlighted the translational potential of biofabrication and demonstrated how research can be translated into innovative applications. Overall, the summer school brought together scientific knowledge, practical training, and professional development, providing participants with a comprehensive insight into both the scientific and translational aspects of the field. Representing the Institute of Biomaterials at this year’s CRC/TRR 225 Summer School were our PhD students Sofia del Salto from the B03 project, Jahid Alakbarli from the C05 project, and Hakan Berk Aydin from the A01 project.
