Dulce Liliana Medina Bueno (PhD student) completed her 1 month secondment at AGH University in Kraków (Poland), in the Department of Biomaterials and Composites supervised by Prof. Elzbieta Pamula. The secondment was part of the EngVIPO – Engineering Vascularized Implants for Personalised Osteochondral Tissue Regeneration: From medical imaging to pre-clinical validation EU project, in which our Institute is one of the partners. The main goal of this secondment was the exchange of knowledge and the acquisition of experience in the production and purification of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). The work aimed to investigate how different culture medium compositions influence productivity, with a particular focus on wet-state yield. Furthermore, the study explored the acid hydrolysis process to obtain BNC suitable for incorporation into hydrogel-based bioinks. Additionally, it helped identify opportunities for process improvement, which will facilitate the future handling of BNC and its integration into various biomaterials with potential applications in osteochondral regeneration.
