Design and development of antimicrobial coatings on nanocrystalline titanium

Nanostructuring is an effective method for improving the longevity and safety of dental implants made from pure titanium. Enhanced mechanical strength of nanocrystalline pure titanium allows to minimize the dimension of implants without adding alloying elements such as aluminium and vanadium, which can be potentially harmful. The main objective of this project is to design antimicrobial coatings on nanocrystalline titanium in order to increase opportunities for application in dental implantology. Electrophoretic deposition is the technique of choice to develop such coatings . This research is financed by the Research Fellowships programme of the European Virtual Institute on Knowledge-based Multifunctional Materials AISBL (KMM-VIN) intended for PhD students and early stage researchers.
