Synergistic hybrid organic- inorganic composite coatings on biodegradable magnesium for orthopedic implants

Supervisor in Egypt: Prof. Dr. Adel Aziz Francis

Supervisor in Erlangen: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Biodegradable magnesium (Mg), owing to its bone-like elastic modulus and density, is a promising material for biomedical implants. However, its high chemical reactivity and poor corrosion resistance in physiological environments limit its clinical reliability. This project develops multilayer organic–inorganic hybrid coatings combining preceramic organosilicon polymers, hydroxyapatite (n-HAP), and chitosan to enhance corrosion protection and bioactivity. Coatings are fabricated using conversion and spin-coating techniques. Characterization includes FTIR, XPS, surface morphology, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), contact angle, adhesion, and microhardness measurements. Bioactivity and cytotoxicity are evaluated in simulated body fluid and using osteoblast-like cells, respectively. This project is being funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in a collaboration between our Institute and the Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute, Egypt (Program for the Promotion of Institutional Partnerships).
