Fabrication and Analysis of Chitosan/Bioactive Glass Coatings for Biomedical Applications

Supervisors: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Dr. Fatih Erdem Baştan

Currently used metallic implants show some drawbacks, such as relativly limited integration with the host tissue, corrosion risk, and toxic corrosion products that can detrimentally influence the performance of the implants. In this project, we study the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of chitosan/hydroxyapatite composite coatings following EPD approaches developed at the FAU Institute of Biomaterials [1]. The project should demonstrate the possibility to functionalize metallic surfaces to tackle the issues mentioned above. The morphology, adhesion, and bioactivity properties of the coatings fabricated with different EPD parameters will be investigated.
