Topic: Biomineralization of polymeric electrospun nanofibers

Supervisor: Dr Shahin Homaeigohar, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Electrospun polymeric nanofiber mats have been largely investigated due to their promising potential in tissue engineering. Their topological structure mimics that of the Extracellular Matrix (ECM) and provides cells with a natural-like surface and therefore effects the cell-growth positively. Furthermore, the porosity offered by these mats has a beneficial effect on cellular activities [1].

For an additional advantageous effect on biocompatibility, this project will explore the biomineralization of polymer (polycaprolactone; PCL) nanofibers through immersing them in simulated body fluid (SBF). Mineralisation is relevant for applications in bone regeneration. This work aims at finding the optimum conditions for biomineralization of the PCL nanofibers regarding immersion duration, and temperature and pH-value of the SBF. The mineralised nanofibres will be compared with bioactive glass containing PCL fibres [2] in terms of degradation behaviour, mechanical properties and degree of bioactivity.
