Biodegradable and bioresorbable polyesters

Supervisor: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Dr. Chris Lovell (Lucideon, UK)

The objective of this research is development of biodegradable and bioresorbable polyesters (BBPE) with antimicrobial activity. Based on the fact that BBPE’s degradation products are acidic, these polymers create an environment with low pH in the region around the degrading device which should be exploited to prevent the growth of bacteria. Different strategies to enhance the antibacterial capability of BBPEs will be explored. The project is carried out in the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN-EID) project “Drug-Free Antibacterial Hybrid Biopolymers for Medical Applications” (HyMedPoly), in close collaboration with LUCIDEON Ltd., UK, and other academic and industrial partners in HyMedPoly.
