Electrophoretic deposition of chitosan-based coatings with drug delivery capability

Betreuer: Svenja Heise, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

The electrophoretic deposition of a chitosan based coatings with drug delivery capabilities on stainless steel substrates is investigated following early investigations at the Institute of Biomaterials [1]. In detail, the aim of the thesis is to fabricate a chitosan composite coating with suitable physical properties like sufficient thickness and good adhesion strength to the substrate. One of the challenges is to decrease the ethanol proportion of the suspension to prevent a degradation of the incorporated drugs. Either osteogenic or antibacterial agents or both will be loaded in the coatings. If the fundamental research on stainless steel substrates brings reproducible results the research will be widened to consider magnesium alloy substrates [2].
