Synergistic hybrid organic- inorganic composite coatings on biodegradable magnesium for orthopedic implants

Supervisor in Egypt: Prof. Dr. Adel Aziz Francis
Supervisor in Erlangen: Prof. Dr. Aldo R. Boccaccini

In this project, we design organic-inorganic hybrid composite coatings based on the combination of synthetic polymers incorporating biodegradable materials (natural hydroxyapatite, n-HAP, and chitosan) for the corrosion protection of Mg substrates. Comprehensive surface characterizations of the organic-inorganic hybrid composite coatings will be performed pre- and post-curing, employing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface morphology, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in simulated body fluids (SBF) solution and contact angle measurements. Bioactivity of coated materials will be characterized by the capability of the materials surface of forming bone-like apatite in simulated body fluid. In addition, the antibacterial activity of the films will be assessed. This project is being funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in a collaboration between our Institute and the Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute, Egypt (Program for the Promotion of Institutional Partnerships).
