Biomimetic three-dimensional (3D) culture systems offer a promising strategy to overcome limitations in ovarian follicle culture and advance artificial ovary technologies for female fertility preservation. However, replicating the ovarian extracellular matrix remains challenging. Building on patterned poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds developed at FAU [1], this project aims to enhance their biological functionality through a natural polymer surface modification, combining PCL structural support and biochemical cues to create a more physiological microenvironment. This strategy includes two approaches: in vitro follicle growth and maturation to obtain developmentally competent oocytes for assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and transplantable artificial ovary constructs to restore ovarian function.

The project is funded by the Abruzzo ESF + Programme 2021–2027 under the objective “Investments for Employment and Growth”, Action “Doctoral Research and Training Programme – Funding for PhD Scholarships”.
