Development of Antiviral and Antibacterial Coatings Based on Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Particles and Chitosan for Technical Textiles

Supervisors: Zoya Hadzhieva, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini

This project focuses on producing antiviral and antibacterial coatings for polyurethane-based mattress covers and thermoformic felts using mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs), chitosan, and MBGNs/chitosan formulations. The coatings will be applied using various coating techniques within the wet-chemistry approach. The work includes extensive characterization to assess morphology, chemical features, and surface interactions, including hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity. The aim is to obtain uniform, durable coatings capable of providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial protection for textile applications.
