Synthesis and Characterization of Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanoparticle-Coated Composite Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

Bone tissue engineering requires porous scaffolds that support bone regeneration by providing a suitable environment for cell attachment and tissue growth. This project consists of two main stages. First, mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) will be synthesized using a microemulsion-assisted approach. The synthesized nanoparticles will be characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Their in vitro bioactivity will be evaluated using simulated body fluid (SBF). In the second stage, 45S5 bioactive glass scaffolds will be fabricated using
the foam replica process. The scaffolds will then be coated with the synthesized MBGNs and a polymer [1], followed by characterization of their mechanical properties and bioactivity for potential bone tissue engineering applications.
