Augusto Covone, a student from the Faculty of Engineering, National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP), Argentina, who carried out a research internship at the FAU Institute of Biomaterials in the framework of the I.DEAR Program (Engineers Deutschland-Argentina, (part of the German-Argentine University Center (CUAA / DAHZ)) successfully defended his Materials Engineering thesis on April 19, 2024. His work, titled “Hybrid electrospun matrices of PCL/Zein for soft tissue engineering”, was directed by Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini (FAU Institute of Biomaterials) and supervised by Francesco Iorio (FAU) and Dr. Gustavo A. Abraham (UNMdP). The study was focused on the fabrication and characterization of polycaprolactone (PCL) and zein/crosslinked zein based scaffolds prepared by green electrospinning technique. Different ratios of PCL-zein / crosslinked zein were explored. Aligned fibers displaying characteristics suitable for use in tendon tissue engineering were produced with these blends. Congratulations Augusto!
