We congratulate Qaisar Nawaz for successfully defending her doctoral thesis titled “Multifunctional SiO2-CaO based mesoporous bioactive glasses with therapeutic ion and biomolecule releasing capability” on 21st July 2022. He carried out his doctoral project in our Institute supervised by Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini in the framework of a DFG funded project collaborating with Prof. Delia Brauer (Univ. of Jena) and Dr. Araceli de Pablos-Martín (at the time at Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems (IMWS), group Nanomaterials and Nanoanalytics, Halle). The examination board was composed by Prof. Antonio Salinas (Complutense University of Madrid, Spain), Prof. Martin Hartmann (CBI Department, FAU), Prof. Dominique De Ligny (Institute for Glass and Ceramics, FAU) and Prof. Boccaccini. Prof. Boccaccini highlighted the very comprehensive research project carried out by Qaisar which led to a wide range of results on the development and application of Mn-dopped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles. He also mentioned the innovative aspect of the thesis, showing icariin as an effective phytotherapeutic agent that can be combined with bioactive glasses to enhance the biological performance of scaffolds. Qaisar is a graduate of the MAP program at FAU.  Several papers have been published from Qaisar’s project (for example [1-2]). Many congratulations to Qaisar for the successful defense of his doctoral thesis, we wish him all the best in his future career.
