The highly cited review paper “Bone tissue engineering therapeutics: controlled drug delivery in three-dimensional scaffolds” (J. R. Soc. Interface 7 (2010), 209–227) was written when Prof. Boccaccini was at the Department of Materials, Imperial College London and Prof. Viviana Mouriño (Department of Pharmacy, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina) was an academic visitor in his research group there. The paper presents an overview of previous work in the field of  3D bone tissue engineering scaffolds with capability for controlled delivery of therapeutic drugs. Prof. Boccaccini said: “incorporating therapeutic drugs in standard bone tissue engineering scaffolds is a powerful approach which has been improved and applied by many research groups worldwide and indeed work in the field has increased over the years. It is good to see that our review continues to be useful for the community”. In the photo, Profs. Mouriño and Boccaccini, who met recently virtually at a training session for PhD students on “Controlled release technology: delivery systems for pharmaceuticals and other agents”, organized in the framework of the Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence.
