Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini celebrates 30 years since earning his doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing., eq. to PhD) at RWTH Aachen University, “Institut für Gesteinshüttenkunde (GHI)” – (now Institute of Mineral Engineering). He defended his doctoral thesis, carried out under supervision of the late Prof. Gerhard Ondracek at the Chair for Glass and Composite Materials (Glas- und Verbundwerkstoffe) at GHI, on 7th February 1994. The thesis, carried out in the field of the microstructure-mechanical property correlation of porous materials, is entitled: “Zur Abhängigkeit der mechanischen Eigenschaften zweiphasiger und poröser Werkstoffe von der Gefüge- bzw. Porositätsstruktur”. Prof. Boccaccini says: “Just like that, 30 years have passed since that evening in February 1994 in Aachen when I defended my thesis, which I carried out under the outstanding supervision of Prof. Gerhard Ondracek. He was a scientific giant in the field, a mentor, an inspiration and the best supervisor I could have hoped for when I left Argentina to carry out my postgraduate studies in Germany in 1988. The years at GHI-RWTH Aachen obviously strongly influenced my following steps in academia and I am grateful to everyone who supported me in different ways during that “old” time as PhD student. Incredibly, I am still in contact with many of them and it is always very special when I visit Aachen and memories of those years as “Doktorand” become vivid again”.
