The first meeting of the Research Unit “Bioinspired Anti-Fatigue” (FOR 5657, BIOAntiFatigue), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), took place on 12th April 2024 at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), hosted by Prof. Claudia Fleck, from the Institute for Materials Science, TU Berlin. This was a preparative meeting to plan the initial steps of the project, including the recruitment of early career researchers and the kick-off meeting. “BIOAntiFatigue” will focus on investigating structure-property strategies based on natural material systems with evolutionarily optimised fatigue resistance. It consists of 4 independent (but interrelated) projects led by researchers from TU Berlin, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, MPI of Colloids and interfaces Potsdam, University of Bayreuth, University of Haifa (Israel) and the FAU Institute of Biomaterials. Our Institute (Dr. Irem Unalan, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini) participates in one the projects of the Research Unit, focusing on fish bone and its fatigue resistance parameters for improved biomimetic design, in collaboration with Prof. Fleck.
