The special issue co-edited by Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini and eminent colleagues in Honor of the late Prof. Larry Hench (1938-2016), the inventor of bioactive glass, has been recently published in J. Mater. Sci. Volume 52, Number 15. The Guest editors’ preface written by Aldo R. Boccaccini, Michael Fenn, Julian R. Jones, Toshihiro Kasuga, M. Grant Norton, Mohammed N. Rahaman, Enrica Verné & Edgar D. Zanotto is available. This is a special collection of 37 papers written by scholars around the world who have been PhD students, colleagues, or academic collaborators of the great scientist Prof. Hench. Larry Hench was an undisputed giant in the field of materials science. His work led to the creation of a completely new family of biomaterials exhibiting strong bonding to human tissues, bioactive glasses. This publication has been prepared as a fitting tribute to Prof. Hench and to recognize his incredible impact and legacy.
