2022 has been declared the Year of Glass by the United Nations, with the goal to increase awareness of the importance of glass in numerous fields, such as industrial, economic, cultural and in scientific research. Several activities are planed in Erlangen to celebrate the UN Year of Glass, with participation of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen (UKER) and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL). The activities are coordinated by Prof. Dominique De Ligny, Institute of Glass and Ceramics, FAU. Our Insitute is also part of the organizing group representing “glasses in medicine” and  bioactive glasses. The kick-off meeting of the Erlangen activities took place on 18th Feb. 2022 (photo) in the Erlangen city centre at the Optikmeisterei on Neustädter Kirchenplatz. One of the windows of the building will be dedicated to different topics around glass science and applications to inform the public with specific posters and exhibits. Moreover an information day is planned for 1st July, to be organised in the WW Department at FAU and at MPL. Our Institute will be present with a lecture on “Bioactive glasses: from bone regenration to wound healing and cancer treatment”. A dedicated webpage informing on the Erlangen activities around the 2022 Year of Glass has been set: https://www.glass-ceramics.tf.fau.de/international-year-of-glass-2022-english-version/
