91st Annual Meeting of the German Glass Society (DGG) in Weimar

Our Institute was represented at the 91st Annual Meeting of the German Glass Society (DGG), held in Weimar, Germany, on 29-31 May 2017. Professor Boccaccini co-organized the special session “Glasses in Healthcare” in collaboration with Prof. Delia Brauer, University of Jena, Germany. Keynote speakers in the session were Prof. Leena Hupa, Åbo Akademi Johan Gadolin Process Chemistry Centre, Finland, and Prof. Jonathan Massera, Tampere University of Technology, Finland (pictured with Prof. Boccaccini). Profs. Brauer, Hupa, Massera and Boccaccini are members of the Technical Committee 04 (TC04, “Bioglasses”) of the International Commission on Glass. In the session “Glasses in Healthcare”, Dr. Kai Zheng presented the oral contribution “Strategies for the Synthesis of Highly Dispersed Cu- and Zn-containing Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles” and Dr. Preethi Balasubramanian presented the oral contribution: “Surface Functionalization of Borosilicate Bioactive Glass Scaffolds”. In addition, the poster entitled: “Development and Characterization of Ordered Mesoporous Bioactive Glasses with Antibacterial Properties (authors: F. Ciraldo and A. R. Boccaccini) was presented. Prof. Boccaccini announced also the recent success of the EU (Horizon 2020) project: “Centre for functional and surface-functionalized glasses (FunGlass)” aiming at establishing a new Centre of Excellence in Trencin, Slovakia on Advanced Glass Materials.
