The latest research in progress meeting of the international project “Development and characterization of drug free bioactive glass nanoparticles for biomedical applications” funded by the British Council under the Pakistan-UK Education Gateway scheme took place online on 19th June 2023. There were presentations of the three principal investigators: Dr. Muhammad Atiq Ur Rehman, Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Institute of Space Technology (IST), Pakistan, Prof. Ipsita Roy, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield, UK, and Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini. In addition, several researchers based in Islamabad, Sheffield and Erlangen, working on different topics within the project, presented their latest results. The project focuses on the fabrication and characterisation of antibacterial bioactive materials based on combinations of bioactive glass nanoparticles and biopolymers, aiming at developing composite coatings to improve the performance of traditional metallic orthopedic implants and also for wound healing applications. Within this project, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers based in Pakistan, UK have the opportunity to carry out part of their research projects in our Institute. Our PhD student Ms Memoona Akhtar is carrying out her doctoral thesis in our Institute as a member of this international project.
